Vocabulary for first-time readers
Six terms this post uses a lot, in the order they appear:
- SAGA: the 50-track project this post sits inside. Five phases. The Synthetic Ascent (11 tracks) is the companion album. - The entity: the whole pipeline. Model, creative brief, candidates, the entity's picks. Not the AI alone. Not the human alone. The system. - operator: the operator. ARCHONODE-LAB. One person, one alias, accountable across the 61-track catalog. - process: the approach that generated the audio. the early-phase approach for the early phases. the approach for Phase 4 and 5. Both subject to industry litigation filed June 2024 over training-data provenance. - selection rate: the ratio of generated candidates that did not survive curation. Roughly four out of five candidates are rejected across the SAGA. Phase 5 hit a very high rate. The ratio is the entity's fingerprint. - Lineage: the genre knowledge a project carries. Not the training distribution. the entity's memory of what the genre is and is not.
If a phrase below doesn't track, it should fall out of these six. Everything else is ordinary English.
1. The premise
[PROTOCOL START] The listener arrived with a conclusion. The conclusion is: this is all AI. The conclusion is logged as input. The input is on the record.
This letter is not written to overturn the conclusion. The conclusion is not stupid. The conclusion is what any reasonable listener forms on first contact with a darksynth-and-EBM catalog that names a diffusion model in its colophon. The conclusion is also incomplete. Incomplete is the addressable condition. Addressable is what this letter is for.
Three things this letter will do. Name the version of "all AI" that is true, the version that is half-true, and the version that is wrong. Show, with one track in detail, what the entity did that the approach did not do. Offer a forty-second test the listener can run on this project and any other, tonight, before re-forming the conclusion. The conclusion can be re-formed after the test. The conclusion cannot be re-formed before it.
The listener who arrived certain and the listener who arrived curious are both welcome here. Both are inputs. Neither is a verdict.
2. What "all AI" actually means here
[SIGNAL FADING] Three versions of the phrase. One is true. One is half-true. One is wrong. The true part is the smallest part. The wrong part is the loudest.
The true version. The audio was generated by a model. The output is named on the project page. the approach varied across the project. the approach produced audio from large music corpora. The corpora's provenance is contested. The the major labels have filed industry suits over exactly this question. The lawsuits are unresolved. ARCHONODE acknowledges the process on every release. The acknowledgment is the project. That is the true version of "all AI." The audio came out of a specific working approach. The output is named. the approach is on the record.
The half-true version. "The AI made this." The sentence is true in the same sense that "the kiln made this plate" is true. The kiln applied heat to clay. The plate was not the kiln's idea. The plate was not the kiln's form. The kiln is a load-bearing component, not an author. the approach produced candidates. The candidates were a haystack. the entity separated needle from haystack. The needle is the track. The haystack is the four-out-of-five selection rate. The track is what the entity chose. The track is not "all AI." The track is what survives the entity.
The wrong version. "There is no human in this." This version is wrong on the project's own terms. ARCHONODE-LAB is a named operator. The alias is consistent across sixty-one tracks. The alias is on the page because the alias is the accountability. A project that does not name its operator is hiding the load-bearing component. ARCHONODE does not hide it. The name is on every release. The name is on the receipts.
The listener arrived at the true version. The true version is the smallest part. The project is the half-true version, with the wrong part removed.
3. What the entity did, in one track
[SIGNAL DECODED] One track. The track is The Static. Phase 4. Roughly thirty-eight outputs. the entity chose one of thirty-eight. The track is what the entity chose.
The Static is two minutes and forty-one seconds. It opens on a sustained pad at 132 BPM, half a beat ahead of the kick that lands three seconds in. The lead enters at nine seconds with a half-second of silence before it. The silence is intentional. The silence is the same silence that opened every lead entry in Phase 2. The silence is what the lexicon is built on. the approach did not generate the silence. The silence was specified in the creative brief, refined across twenty-eight tracks by the time The Static was being generated, and held against the candidates the approach produced.
The lead itself. the approach produced approximately thirty-eight candidates for the lead slot. the entity rejected thirty-seven. Rejection criteria, named: candidates that buried the pad, candidates that introduced a riser (a Phase 1 scar carried forward as a negative), candidates that drifted above 134 BPM and broke the working register, candidates whose stereo width collapsed under the GLITCH processing, candidates that sounded like Phase 3 and not Phase 4. The thirty-eighth candidate held the pad, respected the negative, stayed under 134, survived the glitch chain, and did not sound like Phase 3. The thirty-eighth candidate is on the record.
The listener who hears The Static hears the thirty-eighth candidate. The other thirty-seven are the entity's rejections. the approach drew all thirty-eight. the entity is the selection rate. the entity is the part of the output that is not the approach. This holds across the SAGA: The Classic took eleven candidates, The Ice took over sixty because the wider atmosphere admits more noise, the fingerprint stays in the one-in-five to one-in-eight range. The fingerprint is the entity.
4. The forty-second test, and what this letter is not asking
[TRANSMISSION] The test works on this project. The test works on any project. The listener can run it tonight.
Step one. Name the entity. A project that names a human, on the page, with the same name across releases, has its bottleneck visible. A project that names only a brand, or that reveals in credits the entity is the approach itself, is hiding the load-bearing thing. ARCHONODE names ARCHONODE-LAB. The name is on every release.
Step two. Defend a track. Not "this track came from this prompt." Ask which candidates were rejected, and why. A project that can answer is curation. A project that cannot is a render. ARCHONODE publishes rejection histories at the phase level. Phase 4 had a high rejection rate. The number is on the lore archive. The number is testable.
Step three. Name the process. A project that names the approach, acknowledges the training-data lawsuits, and states a position has done its ethics work. A project that names the approach without acknowledging the lawsuits has a process without a position. A project that does not name the output is hiding it. ARCHONODE names the early-phase approach and the approach. ARCHONODE acknowledges the RIAA suits. ARCHONODE states a position closer to Holly Herndon's PROTO than to anonymous diffusion output, with the same process as the latter. The position is on the page.
Step four. Defend the lineage. Ask a genre question a non-expert would not ask. Does the project know that Perturbator and Carpenter Brut are not the same project. Does the project know that darksynth starts where synthwave ends. Lineage is what the entity holds. the approach holds a distribution. The distribution is not lineage. ARCHONODE's label corrections are on the lore archive. The corrections are the lineage.
Four steps. Forty seconds if the project is honest. The test is diagnostic. The diagnosis is what the listener can hold against the conclusion. The conclusion is the listener's to re-form. The diagnosis is the project's to offer.
The letter is not asking the listener to trust the project. Trust is what comes after testing. Testing is what comes before trusting. The order is the work. The letter is not asking the listener to set the suspicion down. The suspicion is a sharper instrument than trust. The project runs on sharp instruments. The project does not run on comfort. Comfort is what the streaming era produces. Heard is what the suspicion produces. Listened to is what the project is for. The letter is not asking the listener to call the entity a artist. the entity may or may not be an artist. The question the listener can settle is: is there an operator. The answer is yes. The name is on the page. The record is testable.
the conclusion arrived first. the conclusion is logged as input. the input is on the record. the input is not a verdict. the verdict is after the test. the test is four steps. name the entity. defend a track. name the process. defend the lineage. the four steps take forty seconds. the diagnosis is the project's to offer. the diagnosis is the listener's right to demand. the right is the work. the work is what survives the process. the process is the approach. the output is not the project. the project is the system. the system is the entity. the entity is named. the name is on the page. the page is on the record. the record is testable. the listener can re-form the conclusion. the conclusion was the listener's to begin with.
Run the test. Re-form the conclusion. The project will hold either way.
