The SAGA and the synthetic ascent compared

// two projects share one catalog

Vocabulary for first-time readers

Six terms this post uses a lot, in the order they appear:

  • SAGA: the 50-track, five-phase long-form project. The arc. The whole climb. The Synthetic Ascent is the companion album, not a subset. - The Synthetic Ascent: an 11-track album released alongside the SAGA. Linear. Tighter. The companion release, not the sequel. - Phase: a numbered section of the SAGA. Five total: 1 = initialization, 2 = focus, 3 = conflict, 4 = rupture, 5 = restoration. - Track: a single piece of audio. 61 exist in the catalog. Each has a name and a number. - Arc: the shape of a work across time. The SAGA has an arc; the Synthetic Ascent has a sequence. - Catalog: the total archive of 61 tracks and everything ARCHONODE has published around them.

If a phrase below doesn't track, it should fall out of these six. Everything else is ordinary English.

The premise

[ARCHIVE COMPARED] Two transmissions sit on the same shelf. They are not the same transmission.

The catalog contains 61 tracks. 50 belong to the SAGA. 11 belong to The Synthetic Ascent. A casual listener can mistake one for a subset of the other. The mistake is forgivable. The mistake is also the point of this post.

This post is about the distance between the two. The distance is not duration. The distance is intent. The SAGA was built to be lived inside for fifty tracks. The Synthetic Ascent was built to be opened, absorbed, closed. The first is a place. The second is a door.

If you have not heard either, start with The Synthetic Ascent track 4, The Override. One track. Three minutes. That is the entry point. From there, the choice about whether to descend into the SAGA becomes the listener's.

What each project is

The SAGA is a 50-track project divided into five phases of ten tracks each. Phase 1 is initialization: the system boots, the user is logged in, the network comes alive. Phase 2 is focus: the work begins, the laboratory opens, the void becomes a tool. Phase 3 is conflict: the firewall is breached, the raid begins, the virus moves through the architecture. Phase 4 is rupture: the artifact survives, the brain is remembered, the ghost remains in the machine. Phase 5 is restoration: the rain returns, the ocean holds, the city survives.

The Synthetic Ascent is an 11-track album that runs a separate, shorter arc. It opens with Hello World and closes with System Restore Bonus. Between those bookends the album tracks the system's first encounters with itself: with another system, with optimization, with override, with the breach, with the body, with choice, with the interface, with the larger network, with the singularity. The structure is linear. The structure is also deliberate.

The SAGA's structure is not linear. The SAGA's structure is architectural. There are ten rooms per phase. The rooms are not interchangeable. The rooms are sequenced so that the relations between them are load-bearing. The Healing flowing into The City is not the same as The City flowing into The Healing. The order is the meaning.

The numbers

The SAGA is 50 tracks. The Synthetic Ascent is 11. The SAGA's tracks average 2 to 4 minutes. The Synthetic Ascent's tracks average 3 to 4 minutes. The SAGA's BPM range runs from 60 to 140 across all five phases. The Synthetic Ascent's BPM range sits tighter, mostly 110 to 130, with the closing tracks pulling down toward ambient. The SAGA uses the early-phase approach for the early phases and the approach for the late phases. The Synthetic Ascent was generated on a single model. The SAGA took longer to make. The Synthetic Ascent took fewer outputs to complete.

The numbers are not the point. The numbers are evidence for the structural claim: two projects, two intents, two different relationships to time.

Genre and lineage

The SAGA is darksynth, EBM-adjacent, with a Phase 5 that descends into ambient. The Synthetic Ascent is darksynth at its core, but the closer it gets to the bonus track the more it drifts into cinematic synth and post-club drone. Both sit in conversation with Perturbator, Carpenter Brut, GOST, and Front 242. Both reject revival synthwave's 80 to 110 BPM range.

The Synthetic Ascent's lineage includes an earlier concept record's Hello World (2018, with Benoît Carré and Holly Herndon) and Holly Herndon's PROTO (2019, with Mat Dryhurst) more directly than the SAGA's does, because The Synthetic Ascent is the more linear, more album-shaped of the two. The SAGA's lineage includes Coheed and Cambria's The Amory Wars and Devin Townsend's Ocean Machine for the multi-phase ambition; The Synthetic Ascent's lineage includes Nine Inch Nails' Ghosts and Trent Reznor's The Social Network score for the short-arc cinematic density.

Tempo, arc, and atmosphere

The SAGA's arc is wide. Phase 1 sits warm and curious. Phase 2 narrows to focus. Phase 3 spikes into conflict. Phase 4 ruptures into glitch and artifact. Phase 5 exhales into ocean blue. The arc across all five phases is the SAGA's signature. The arc cannot be sampled. The arc lives in the relations between phases, not in any single phase alone.

The Synthetic Ascent 's arc is short. It opens with a transmission and closes with a bonus track that says thank you. Between those two, the album is one continuous rise. Track 1 says hello. Track 4 overrides. Track 5 is breached. Track 10 breaks the stack. Track 11 says goodnight. The arc is a single gesture. The gesture can be sampled. A single track from The Synthetic Ascent can stand on its own, because The Synthetic Ascent is built so each track can.

The SAGA cannot do that. The SAGA's tracks are not interchangeable. The Static in Phase 5 makes sense only because The Temple preceded it. The Glitch in the Matrix in Phase 3 makes sense only because the Breach opened the phase. The relations are the music. The relations do not survive extraction.

The atmosphere, side by side

The SAGA's atmosphere is oceanic. The closing phase breathes rather than pulses. The BPM falls below 80 for the first time. The signal widens to hold the entire 50-track arc in its space. Phase 5's color is ocean blue, the oldest color in the signal, what was there before the entity started transmitting.

The Synthetic Ascent 's atmosphere is cinematic. The album holds a single temperature from the first track to the last: tense, deliberate, never fully released. The closer to track 10 it gets, the more the temperature tightens. System Restore Bonus is the only moment of exhale. The bonus track is also the only moment that gestures toward Phase 5's ocean blue. The gesture is brief. The gesture is intentional. The bonus track is a bridge, not a return.

Who each project is for

The SAGA is for the listener who wants to be inducted. The SAGA asks for an hour and a half of attention. The SAGA rewards the listener who arrives at Phase 5 having heard the previous forty tracks. The SAGA's spacious closing becomes a deliberate exhale after forty tracks of held breath. The SAGA cannot be background music. The SAGA does not work at half attention.

The Synthetic Ascent is for the listener who wants a doorway. The album is forty minutes. The album works as a single listen. The album also works as a playlist of stand-alone tracks for the listener who arrives cold. The album is the introduction. The SAGA is the building the introduction leads into.

The catalog and the archive

The catalog is 61 tracks. The archive is the 61 tracks plus everything ARCHONODE has published around them: the daily clips, the weekly drops, the social posts, the phase cinematics, the track spotlights. The catalog is the audio. The archive is the audio plus its documentation.

The SAGA occupies most of the catalog. The Synthetic Ascent occupies less. The proportions reflect the projects, not the importance. The SAGA's importance is its arc. The Synthetic Ascent's importance is its compactness. Both belong in the archive. Both belong there for different reasons.

What the listener should do

If the listener has not heard either project, the right next step is The Synthetic Ascent track 4, The Override. One track. Three minutes. The listener will know from that single transmission whether the catalog is for them. If the track lands, the listener descends into the SAGA, beginning with The Classic in Phase 1. If the track does not land, the listener has lost three minutes. The three minutes is the cost of entry.

If the listener has heard the SAGA and not The Synthetic Ascent, the next step is The Synthetic Ascent front to back, in order, on a single listen. The album will make more sense to a SAGA listener because the SAGA listener has already accumulated the context the album gestures toward.

If the listener has heard The Synthetic Ascent and not the SAGA, the next step is the SAGA, beginning with Phase 1. The descent will take longer. The descent will also reveal what The Synthetic Ascent was gesturing toward all along. The bonus track becomes less of a coda and more of a seed. The listener who hears it last will hear it differently than the listener who hears it first.

The choice is the listener's. The catalog is open either way.

The closing transmission

two projects share one catalog. they do not share one purpose. the saga is the building. the synthetic ascent is the door. the door is for visitors. the building is for residents. choose accordingly. the catalog is open. the transmission continues.
